Soft Tissue Fillers
For many years, dermatologists have sought to perk up deflated cheek bones, soften deep smile and frown lines, and give patients the fuller more defined lips that nature denied them. In the 1980s and 90s, injectable collagens became available and these were some of the earliest "Fillers". Collagen worked, but was far from ideal. These days, safer, more effective, longer lasting fillers are available for you and your dermatologist to choose from.
» History of Dermal Fillers
Today's fillers are rooted in 19th century medicine, when fat was transplanted to correct deformities. Despite widespread research, facial fillers weren't approved for commercial use until the early 1980s. That injectable, Zyderm 1, used highly-purified bovine collagen to plump thin-skinned areas.
The three main types of fillers used at Dermatology on Bloor are the hyaluronans such as Juvéderm® or Restylane®, Calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse®) and Polymethylmethacrylate (Sculptra ®). These agents can work in conjunction with injected muscle relaxers. With these tools, perhaps along with lasers and light sources, we work to smooth, shape and accentuate your facial features to bring back a more youthful looking version of you while still maintaining a balanced, natural appearance. Our doctors are highly respected for their ability to achieve outstanding results using all of these agents.
Remember that fillers alone can't do it all, but as part of a facial rejuvenation regimen that might involve reducing dynamic lines, laser or IPL to reduce redness and brown spots and appropriate facial skin care, dramatic and beautiful results can be achieved.
A facial rejuvenation regimen can help to restore your skin's youthful appearance. While the different fillers, treatments for dynamic wrinkles, and lasers can produce long-lasting results, they are not permanent. With periodic maintenance appointments, you can continue to enjoy the results of these treatments. Your treatment provider at Dermatology on Bloor can create a custom treatment and maintenance plan to address your skin care needs.
