Recently, new advances have allowed the use of the healing powers of a person’s own circulating growth factors to improve the texture of skin on the face, the neck and the chest. Finely wrinkled, crepe-paper-like skin is sometimes seen on the lower eyelids of some adults, the cheeks, or the décolleté of even young women because of aging or excess sun exposure. In the past, this type of fine wrinkling was very difficult to treat. These patients can now benefit from a series of Selphyl® treatments.
In this procedure, a small quantity of the patient’s own blood is drawn, and from this sample the patient’s growth factors, white cells, and platelets are extracted and concentrated using a centrifuge to spin the blood. Nothing is added and these components are not modified. This supercharged sample, called Platelet-Rich Plasma or Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix is then injected into the areas to be treated through very fine needles. Over several sessions (usually 2 or 3), the skin improves in texture and tone through the action of growth and healing factors that we all produce.
Each treatment is easily tolerated with no side effects other than rare, occasional bruises which fade over a few days. Selphyl® therapy can be combined with injected muscle relaxers, dermal fillers, or even some of our laser therapies, sometimes during the same visit. The results are often the appearance of a tighter and brighter skin texture.
Some exciting new applications for Selphyl® are on the horizon that may help us to enhance our patients’ beauty in other ways using this Platelet-Rich Plasma technique as well.
