Often, over time, small red, purple, or blue veins appear on the legs. These “spider veins” often make people self-conscious. Larger veins can even cause some achiness and discomfort. People who are very active, work on their feet, or have a family history can all suffer from spider veins. Patients with issues such as these may benefit from sclerotherapy.
Sclerotherapy has been a popular way for patients to reduce the appearance of these unwanted blood vessels. Using a specialized solution, a dermatologist will use a very fine needle to inject the veins. While this is very safe, the veins are irritated a bit by it and close down, and your body then safely and effectively absorbs the vessels. The loss of these veins is of no harm and they are not necessary for circulation. The procedure is generally very well tolerated and most patients feel only small occasional “pinches.” The side effects are minimal; after the procedure, the patient’s legs can be a bit bumpy and itchy for a short time. Patients are asked to wear compression stockings for a few weeks after their treatments.
You may need multiple injections for certain veins to disappear, but most people will see a significant improvement in the appearance of their veins. When there are larger veins, our doctors may recommend laser vein removal treatments instead, for more effective results.
