Accutane Side Effect Management
While on Accutane, certain side effects may occur. Here is how to manage them.
DRY LIPS OR NASAL MUCOSA
Lubricants such as Petroleum Jelly
Eye lubricants such as Natural tears
Use moisturizing creams, such as Cetaphil, Cerave, and Lipikar AP
ELEVATED CHOLESTEROL & TRIGLYCERIDES
Avoid fatty food and alcohol to reduce the risk. Reduce your consumption of dairy products other than 1% milk or skim milk. Also reduce your consumption of cuts of meat that are fatty and fried foods. Maintain or increase your activity level.
It is necessary for women who are taking or plan to take Accutane to use an "infallible" form of birth control. This must begin one month prior to therapy, be continued during the therapy and for a period of two months after the therapy is completed. Accutane can cause serious damage to the developing fetus.
SORE ACHING JOINTS
Mild soreness and aching in the back and other joints sometimes occurs and normally does not require therapy. If necessary, Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help.
These can develop in some cases. If the headache is severe or you experience other symptoms such as visual disturbances or nausea STOP the Accutane and immediately call your doctor.
Night time vision can sometimes be reduced. Please insure your ability to see at night before operating a vehicle. If this develops you should STOP the Accutane.
Do not take supplements such as Vitamin A or tetracycline during the course of therapy. The amount of vitamin A that naturally occurs in food is not a concern.
Some patients may experience feelings of depression, listlessness, irritability, or agitation while taking Accutane. If this happens to a significant degree, STOP the Accutane and call your doctor.
Accutane can make you burn when out in the sun. You must wear sunscreen.
