As much emphasis as is placed on facial treatments to reduce the signs of aging, the neck cannot be forgotten. If this vital area does not receive attention, it will show at some point in time. Your neck and your face will be telling different stories.
Neck bands are one of two problems that indicate age. These lines across the neck stem from the platysma, muscle tissue that begins at the chest and fans upward and outward to the jaw. The other problem that can cause one to seek high-necked clothing is sagging skin. Each of these changes occur with age, though genetics can have a large influence on just how much loosening takes place and how much elasticity is lost in the skin. Other factors that may increase the risk of neck bands include weight and sun damage.
There are many ways in which the neck can age, and until recently, there was really only one solution for a sagging neck - surgery. Although, in some cases, skin and muscle have become so loose that surgery is the best option for neck bands
, a number of non-invasive solutions
are available today. In our Toronto
dermatology office, patients have the advantage of working with an experienced team committed to their needs.
The mildest cases of laxity in the neck area may respond well to high quality cosmeceutical skin care. Topical creams may also come in prescription form, such as Retin-A, which contains retinoids that speed-up cellular turn over, producing more collagen and elastin in the skin of the neck which results in tighter, plumper skin. Professional skin care products are designed to meet specific needs such as loose skin and may contain ingredients like antioxidants and peptides. The goal of skin care is to nourish the skin by supplementing its natural processes for elasticity.
One of the fastest and most sought after non-surgical solutions to neck bands is Botox treatment. With a few carefully placed injections, your dermatologist reduces the downward pull on the platysma muscle, allowing the muscles that naturally pull upward to achieve their purpose.
Sagging skin on the neck may also be addressed with in-office procedures such as Thermage. This procedure tightens skin from the inside out by directing radiofrequency energy to the cells in the dermis. The targeted heat from Thermage treatment encourages a wealth of collagen which tightens the skin for a more youthful appearance.
